St. Augustine's and The Episcopal Church Welcomes You!
Questions and Answers about The Episcopal Church
What do Episcopalians believe?
We believe in one God— Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We believe in respecting the dignity of every human being. We believe that there are three sources of authority: Scripture, Tradition, and Reason; with Scripture being the final authority. We believe that we walk the “middle way” (via media) between Protestant and Catholic traditions. We believe that “praying shapes believing.” We believe in striving for justice and peace.
How can I learn more about The Episcopal Church?
Ask Father AJ. He can be reached by email at [email protected], by phone at (504) 887-4801, on Facebook, or in his office at St. Augustine's.
May I receive Communion at the Holy Eucharist?
Yes, absolutely! All baptized Christians, whether you’re officially an Episcopalian or not, are welcome to receive Communion in The Episcopal Church, and at St. Augustine's.
How will I know what to do at the Holy Eucharist?
Like anything new, you may feel a little uncertain at the beginning. However, Father AJ announces all page numbers and gives instructions about what to do and when. You’ll soon get the hang of it.
What can I expect?
Expect a friendly and welcoming group of people who are glad you’re there and eager to help you. You don’t have to come with anything or pretend to be a certain person, just come as you are.
What is the service like?
The primary worship service of The Episcopal Church is Holy Eucharist, also known as Holy Communion, the Mass, or the Lord’s Supper. At this service we bless and share bread and wine. There are also Bible readings and prayers. Our Sunday service at St. Augustine's has hymns we sing.
Do I have to receive the bread and the wine?
No, if you’d prefer not to have either the bread or wine you can simply come forward at communion along with everyone else and fold your arms over your chest to receive a blessing.
What does ‘Episcopal’ mean?
Basically, it means a church with bishops. The word comes from the Greek episkopos meaning “overseer.” The bishop is the chief pastor for a geographical region called a diocese. We are in the Diocese of Louisiana, which covers the bottom portion of the state.
